What's on the McDonald's menu and what are the prices? McDonald's menu is the same across the UK - stock and ice cream machines permitting - but prices do differ. For example, in central London, a Big Mac will set you back at least £5.39 as a singular item, but in Brighton, the same item costs roughly £4.79.

(Narrator voice: It's not.) Now, almost a year after the post, a top McDonald's executive wants to set the record straight. In a recent letter, Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald's USA, said $18 for a Big Mac combo was the “exception” and not the norm across all 13,700 restaurants in the country.

The study showed that on average Brits eat out 1.5 times a week, spending up to £53 ($83) per meal. That equates to roughly £4,166 ($6,523) spent dining out, or 25% of the average annual income.

At 8.07 U.S. dollars, Switzerland has the most expensive Big Macs in the world, according to the July 2024 Big Mac index. Concurrently, the cost of a Big Mac was 5.69 dollars in the U.S., and 6.06 U.S. dollars in the Euro area.

Take for instance the iconic Big Mac — in the UK the epic burger has 493 calories, 9.4g of sugars, 8.8g saturated fat and 2.2g salt. But in the US, the same burger contains almost 100 calories more, coming in at 590. It also has 9g sugar, 11g saturated fat and 2.6g salt.

George Jijiashvili, senior principal analyst at Omdia, said UK prices on Apple products are higher due to value-added tax (VAT) implemented by the UK government.

The Big Mac is made with two 1.6 oz (45 g) beef patties, a "special sauce" (similar to Thousand Island dressing), shredded iceberg lettuce, one processed American cheese slice, two slices of dill pickle, and minced onions, served on a three slice sesame seed bun.

In New York City, the same combo of Big Mac, medium fries and medium soda costs $13.89 on DoorDash before any fees or delivery charges — or $17.79 if you swap the soda for a shake.

It's possible to buy a gallon of milk, just not in a single container. At the moment, Sainsbury's and Tesco are only showing the prices for 2 and 4 pints on their website. 2 pints is 80p, 4 pints is £1.10. Going by that, a gallon of milk will cost you between £2.20 and £3.20.

During our visits in February 2023, we found that prices in the grocery stores were relatively affordable. However, some items, like eggs, were significantly cheaper in the UK and, overall, our shopping list would cost us far less in the UK.
