But of course there's a catch.

Beyoncé. Elon Musk. Grimace. One of these was not who I was expecting to top the list of most influential people of 2023, but history proved me wrong. Yes, the purple taste bud and McDonaldland character experienced the comeback to end all comebacks when McDonald's released the bright purple Grimace Shake last year to commemorate Grimace's birthday and essentially broke the internet.
However, like all the best fast food releases, the Grimace Shake was a limited-time menu item, and was gone too soon. But this week McDonald's announced that the Grimace Shake is officially returning—and going where it's never gone before.
Is the Grimace Shake Back for 2024?
In an official press release from May 13, McDonald's confirmed that for the second summer in a row, the Grimace Shake is, indeed, returning. "The rumours are true," the post begins. If you're thinking, "Um hello, you misspelled rumors," that will tip you off to the catch here. While the purple potable is back, it's only north of the border this time.
That's right—the Grimace Shake is coming to Canada this time. "After several reported sightings, McDonald’s Canada is confirming Grimace has officially arrived in Canada," the press release states. Evidently, rumo[u]rs have been floating around the internet for a few weeks now, ever since Grimace was spotted at a Vancouver Canucks hockey game.
Starting today, Canadians will be able to get their hands on Grimace Shakes for a limited at participating locations (and if their local Mickey D's ice cream machines are working). Last summer, the shake was only available stateside, so McDonald's probably figured it was time to spread the Grimace love.
"Surpriiiiise…Hope u didn’t have 2 much fomo. I had the funnest bday last year. Think my Canadian besties could use a little sumthin' sweet :)", Grimace apparently wrote in "a hand-written note to the McDonald’s Canada communications team," according to the press release.
Well, now we're the ones with FOMO, and it's not the first time (looking at you, Squishmallows McFlurry and short-lived waffle fries). If you're still undecided on a summer vacation destination, might we suggest Canada? It's just a short trip over the border, and there's a purple milkshake waiting for you on the other side.
